sister-sister time
jess and ben were in nyc this past weekend! bummer that we didn't get to see them, but as things worked out, jess was back in the city today for meetings and a client dinner. she stayed the night so that we could catch up a little (YAY!!), but since her dinner ran late and i was suffering from the previous night's red-eye flight, we only had about an hour to ourselves before the sandman came.
still, it was really nice to have a little sister-sister time :) and she left a nearly entire filet mignon in our fridge. lol. fried rice time?

rocketpig & raspberry pi
it was a beautiful afternoon when we hurried out of our respective offices for kevin's 35th birthday celebration!
kevin had requested a little celebration with just the two of us, and since we have a race tomorrow morning at the park, i planned a quiet night for us at the apartment. with two picnic combos from rocket pig spread out on the coffee table, we watched an oldie but goody from our respective pasts: back to the future i.
each of our picnic combo came with a smoked, spice-rubbed pork on ciabatta rolls with red onion jam and mustard sauce, two house-made pickles, coleslaw, chips, a brownie, an oatmeal raisin cookie, and ginger/root beer. we were floored by the rocket pig sandwiches. they were unbelievable - hands down THE BEST pork sandwich i have ever eaten, the meat tender, yet lean, and falling apart. we will definitely be going back and bringing all of our friends!
here's a pic of kevin playing around with his new raspberry pi! we're not sure what he's going to do with it exactly yet, but i have no doubt his brain is working overtime to figure out his next project :)

green coffee
for the last few months, kevin has been preparing pourover coffee and packing it into our toppot insulated mugs in the mornings. i usually need more time than him to get ready for work in the morning, so i try to line up my hair, makeup, and accessorizing time with his coffee making time. LOL. usually i still need more time though and he's waiting for me with his jacket and shoes on at the front door.
i'd assumed that kevin was making artisanal coffee each morning in part because it tasted better, as a personal hobby, and to kill time waiting for me, but today he mentioned to me that it was also in part to save on buying coffee and wasting paper cups day after day.
this put a huge smile on my face ... we both keep nalgene's at the office for drinking water and i also keep a pair of chopsticks (as not to use the bleached wooden chopsticks from various food vendors). a next step would be to reduce the use of plastic cutlery at the office - currently i use one spoon and one fork a day at the office. if everyone did this, it would create a whole lot of unnecessary trash.
so maybe next week i'll bring in my own spoon and fork. this will require a little time each day to bring my cutlery to the kitchen and wash them, but it's the least i can do for mother earth :) we try to be as green as possible at home too, reusing and repurposing as many disposable containers as possible, and recycling the others. in fact, our recycling container fills up many times faster than our trash bin.
i talk about reducing reusing repurposing and recycling too much though :p
on another note, my friend from japan has officially moved to the USA!!! welcome, yvonne! i was so happy to bring her for your first officially american meal at chipotle ~ chicken burrito bowl ~ this afternoon! and i have a new friend for spa trips in flushing!

the little things
happy friday!
i was a little slow this morning getting out of bed, so kevin heading off to the train without me. we usually take the 1 train together to 42nd street, but every once in a while, we'll get separated in our morning commutes.
this morning, however, i was pleasantly surprised with my mini toppot stainless steel insulated mug filled with kevin's pour-over coffee. black. hot. just the way i like it. and it left me bouncing off the walls for the next 16 hours as well.
in the evening, we met at the apartment around 6 and kevin had picked up some yummy cheese at the grand central murray's. what a cool work place, where one can access irving coffee, shake shack, junior's cheesecake, and murray's cheese all in one building. we had our favorite aged gouda, and tried two new ones as well.
yep, it's the little things we do for each other, uhm, that he does for me :p
at quarter after six, the doorbell rang and we met with kristofer ghady, our homepolish interior designer, for the first time. while we have picked up most of the furniture for the loft, i think we're reaching the point where we are looking for someone with a good eye and modeling capabilities to give us ideas and renderings for the master bedroom, and to help us pick out the finishing touches which will make each room feel cohesive. kris was super easy going and we enjoyed our consultation with him. we'll speak with a decorilla designer this weekend as well, and make a decision from there.

the little things
best: both of us making it home before 6pm and having a homemade dinner together! we had a huge serving of 烏魚子 with our meal, as well as the second half of the sour cream apple walnut pie. the little things in life which make me smile. also didn't hurt that the time warner dvr installation guy and backsplash subcontractor both stopped by in the evening.
worst: realizing that i forgot my cell phone after we swiped into the subway station this morning. NERD! my cell phone feels like my lifeline these days.
smile: the time warner dvr installation guy, aleksander, was a cheerful, polite russian guy. interacting with him was one of the highlights of my day and i gave him all 9+ (on a scale of 1-9) on the tw appointment survey.
