but there are times when keeping abreast with the local and global news really brings me down, and this is one of those times.
- last week, there was a massive fire which decimated approximately 200 luxury condo homes in edgewater, nj. the fire expanded and engulfed the complex over a period of 16 hours. luckily the fire started in the afternoon so no deaths were reported, though i believe a number of firefighters were hurt. link
- this past weekend, there was another massive fire at a warehouse storing paper documents in williamsburg on north 11th street and kent ave along the east river. we ran along kent ave many times during our time in williamsburg, and we ran right next to that warehouse a few times. luckily, no deaths were reported. link
- but it gets worse. yesterday evening during rush hour, a metro north train crashed into an SUV vehicle on the tracks and six people were killed and numerous passengers were severely injured. it was the deadliest accident in the history of the metro north. link
- this morning, a transasia plane carrying 58 passengers en route to jingmen crashed into the keelung river shortly after taking off from songshan airport. at least 23 people were killed so far. it is the second transasia flight to crash in seventh months, following an accident last july which killed 48 people and injured fifteen. link
- on january 24, 2015, shaimaa el-sabbagh, a 31-year old peaceful protester was shot and killed by egyptian police at talaat harb square while laying a wreath as a memorial. link
- on february 2, 2015, isis released a video of the live-burning of a 26-year old jordanian fighter pilot prisoner, first lieutenant moaz al-kasabeh. the jordan government and isis had been in talks to do a prisoner swap, but as a result of the video, jordan has now executed two isis-related prisoners in retaliation. link
- and this is after two japanese reporters, kenji goto and haruna yukawa, were recently beheaded by isis. link
