after enjoying daniel james brown's writing style (author of the boys in the boat) so thoroughly, i decided to check out another one of his works, the indifferent stars above: the harrowing saga of a donner party bride.
having never heard of the donner party, i was intrigued by the non-fiction narrative of 19th century settlers traveling west. about 30 minutes into the book, i said to kevin "hey, have you heard of the donner party before? i'm reading a book about their journey west". to this, he replied that he was familiar with the donner party, and proceeded to tell me what was a partial spoiler for the book (i'll spare the spoiler here). bummer!
in any case, i continued on with the book, drawn in by the unfortunate series of events which led to the harrowing journey for the donner party through the sierra nevadas in 1846. it was an amazing and eye-opening story, learning about life before the exploration westward, industrial revolution, modern hygiene, and technology.
it makes me feel so incredibly lucky to be living in the present day.
